What is CBN?

Known as the “sleepy cannabinoid”, Cannabinol (CBN) is one of the rising stars of medicinal cannabis – and it is growing in popularity in the United States.

It can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments, from insomnia to joint pain, and it can be purchased in many different forms, including oils, creams, and tinctures.

CBN isolate is a type of Cannabinol product, and many people – including some who have purchased and taken it – don’t know exactly what it is and how it differs from other CBN products.

This article will tell you everything you need to know about CBN isolate so you can decide if it’s something you may be interested in trying.

What is CBN Isolate?

CBN isolate essentially encompasses all products which have a very high percentage of Cannabinol content and very little other cannabinoids and other compounds. Some CBN isolate products can have a Cannabinol content of over 99 percent, with no other cannabinoids, terpenoids, and flavonoids.

CBN isolate generally comes as a powder or in crystal form.

Such CBN products are odorless and flavorless – unlike many other types of Cannabinol oils which may be artificially flavored or simply have their own natural taste and smell.

What is it Used For?

Like other Cannabinol products, CBN isolate can be used to treat a wide variety of ailments, including sleep-related conditions, like insomnia, in addition to joint pain and anxiety

CBN’s strength as a sedative is the primary reason why it can treat many of these conditions, as it has a calming effect on the body. However, it also has other uses which aren’t related to it being a sedative.

For example, research suggests that CBN isolate can be used as an effective anti-bacterial agent and it also has anti-inflammatory properties which make it potentially useful in the treatment of countless conditions of varying severity.

How is CBN Isolate Made?

There are two main methods that are used to extract CBN from cannabis and produce CBN isolate: CO2 extraction and solvent extraction.

The first method consists of passing CO2 through a mixture of cannabis plants to extract Cannabinol and some other impurities, while the latter involves using a solvent to remove CBN from cannabis plants.

CO2 extraction is considerably more expensive, but the final mixture has fewer impurities (as this process doesn’t also result in the simultaneous extraction of chlorophyll), so it is generally favored by the industry.

Is CBN Isolate Psychoactive?

As CBN isolate is almost entirely made up of Cannabinol, which is believed to be a “mildly psychoactive” compound, consuming it does induce a high in your body. However, some research indicates that CBN actually isn’t psychoactive, so it’s not as clear cut as it may first seem.

This point ties into the legality of Cannabinol products, including CBN isolate. Because it is considered somewhat psychoactive, it is illegal in many jurisdictions where CBD, a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, is legal. However, CBN isolate is legal throughout the United States.

A Quick Summary

  • CBN isolate is essentially a mixture which has a very high Cannabinol content, a cannabinoid which is best known for its strong sedative properties, and very few other compounds.
  • This makes it effective in the treatment of conditions such as insomnia and anxiety.
  • CBN isolate can also be used as an anti-inflammation and anti-bacterial agent.
  • It can be produced either via CO2 extraction or solvent extraction, with the latter being more cost-effective but leading to more impurities in the final mixture.
  • CBN isolate is believed to be “mildly psychoactive”, so taking it can result in you feeling a high.
  • However, some scientists argue that Cannabinol isn’t psychoactive at all.
